From Prison to Pulpit: My Road to Redemption
Published in Hardcover by Publisher (November, 1994)
Authors: Vaughan Booker and David Phillips
Average review score:

An uplifting story that proves rehabilitation is possible.
I have worked within the system and witnessed many things, I can attest to the accuracy and honesty in this book. Father Booker explains the events that lead to his incarceration and rehabilitation with such honest emotion, that one can not help but "feel" as if they are actually on the journey with him. He was able to accomplish many things( education, work, tutor) that would normally be viewed as impossible to do from a prison cell. His positive outlook on life and love of God are evident in his life. Perhaps, this is why he is able to write so honestly about his journey.

A message of hope for those in an environment of despair.
This book should be made readily available to all prison inmates. The story would be enlightening to correcctions(incarceration) staff. The author(s) have shed light on many issues which should be addressed in today's legal and penal system. Those in society who believe, incorrectly, in the infalability of law enforcement and corrections people would have their eyes opened by this very nicely handled treatment of a delicate subject.

The Garden Pack: The Only Three-Dimensional Planning Kit That Allows You to Create Different Designs for Your Ideal Garden
Published in Paperback by Viking Press (March, 1999)
Authors: Sue Phillips and Charles Ensor
Average review score:

Great fun and very helpful. Time & $ saver
I have never come across such a fun tool for designing a garden. A flat picture in a book or on paper just isn't the same. There are 100's of punch out plants and garden fixtures, paper to cut for the pools, patios, walkways, etc. There are cutouts of fences etc. What fun! Combining this with any good quality gardening book with color photos and size information is a wonderful way to play in the garden even when it is raining. Great for those 'what-if' situations. I recommend it for anyone who is just starting out or even pros. It would really be helpful for clients who just don't seem to be able to visualize what they see on paper. Bravo!

Brilliantly done concept, design, artwork and text.
A real value. The book included in the pack is worth far more than the price of the entire pack. The ingeniuosly designed kit is a treasure for anyone, no matter where they live, and with any size, type or configuration of lot or land to place their plants, shrubs, trees, flowers, walkways, fences, -- whatever they wish to try or design or grow. And you can use the kit over and over, no matter where in the world you move, and to design as many gardens and yards and areas for yourself, your family and anyone else that you want to. We have a terraced hillside property, and we are really excited about using the kit. We have never seen so much comprehensive knowledge and information in one kit or book, certainly not at this price. And you get a soil test kit, too! We have not discovered such a value in a long, long time. Thanks for asking!

Georgia O'Keeffe: The Poetry of Things

wonderful gift
I sent this book as a gift, based on the glowing review on this page. My donee/friend wrote: "What a wonderful surprise and delight the O'Keefe book has brought me today! It is indeed something very special, with elegant color illustrations, plus many photos from various times of her life, and biographical details all through the text. There is a wonderful photo of her (by Ansel Adams) -- she wears a dark sweater, and is sitting, sketching, at the rocky entrance to what may be a cave --- and all of her design ideas seem to be there in the photo: her own interesting form, contrasts of dark and light, austerity yet beautiful rhythms....I had no idea what a pathfinder she was, going her own road by interpreting objects in an entirely personal way. Everything has her magic touch. The color plates are excellent." I have her permission to send these comments to you.

Outstanding book from an outstanding exhibition
This is the companion catalog to the O'Keeffe exhibition at the Phillips gallery in Washington, DC, and is a wonderful volume on O'Keeffe whether or not you were fortunate enough to see this exhibition. What impressed me most about the exhibition (and the book) is how intelligently it was put together. It examines O'Keeffe's development as an artist by tracking both her philosphy and her influences, and some rarely shown works were chosen to represent this in the exhibition (and are reproduced in the book). Of all the books on O'Keeffe that I've read, and of all the exhibitions I've seen of her work, this one by far does the best job of explaining both the artist and her work.

Getting Thru to Kids: Problem Solving With Children Ages 6 to 18
Published in Paperback by Holistic Communications (July, 1997)
Author: Phillip Mountrose
Average review score:

5-step miracle
The 5-step process described in Phillip Mountrose's award-winningbook "Getting Thru to Kids" is a 5-step miracle. Finally we have an easy, comprehensive guide to growing up. Our daughter is almost nine, and our family has been using this wonderful book since Oct. 1999, with splendid results. We have solved existing problems and nipped future ones in the bud. The only problem with "Getting Thru to Kids" that we've experienced has been trying to suggest it as a resource to other parents. Their initial response? "Well, anything would work with your daughter - she's a great kid!" We have a great kid because we were fortunate enough to read and implement "Getting Thru to Kids"! We recommend this book to the entire human race.

Parent alert...read this book and do yourself a favor.
After reading Phillips book I saw my fourteen year old daughter differently. I saw her as she really is and now she is free to show me her best self. I no longer contribute to her need to hide from me. Our trust has skyrocketed and we are having fun again. Don't let anyone convince you that the teens have to be terrible. Just ask Phillip and read his books.

A God to Call Father: Discovering Intimacy With God

Dittos
I am in complete agreement with the Portland reviewer. This book SHOULD NOT be out of print!

I served as a pastor for 4 years and recommended this book to everyone who I disclipled. It's required reading on my personal "Christianity 101" course.

A word of caution: This is no fluffy devotional. Like climbing a mountain where there are many who set out for the journey, but don't make it to the top, this book is life-impacting enough to scare many away from finishing. I know some who have been hit so hard by it, they put it down saying, "I want intimacy with God, but I'm not sure I want that much." Don't do it. Climb to the summit. The view is astounding.

If you love
C.S. Lewis and George MacDonald, then you will enjoy this book. Written in the tradition of the 2 authors above, this book is a beautifully written allegory about how God views us and how He would like us to view Him and of the intimate relationship He wants with all of us. This book totally turned my spiritual journey upside down! Phillips presents God as a loving Father in a way that anyone can relate to. A far cry from what has been presented from pulpits for many years. Every Christian and those who are searching for an intimate relationship with God, should read this book. This book should not be out of print!

Grand Strategy of Phillip II
Published in Paperback by Yale Univ Pr (01 April, 2000)
Author: Geoffrey Parker
Average review score:

History that illuminates the near past and present
Geoffrey Parker's study of Philip II is a landmark. In this penetrating analysis, Parker has successfully distilled and tied together four decades of modern scholarship on strategy, decision making, and organization theory with an original evaluation of Philip of Spain's motivations, priorities, and execution. Gone are the nationalistic generalizations and the structural excuses. Structural and institutional factors get coverage, but the real story is in the man at the top, who had to make the decisions, good and bad.

Parker starts with a discussion on the strategic culture surrounding Philip, to include his "strategic inheritence" from his father, Charles V, the massive information network over which Philip presided (and the irresistable temptation to micro-manage), and the 'messianic imperialism' context that was of Philip's own making.

Messianic imperialism is the backbone for the rest of the book, which deals with the formation and the execution of grand strategy. Parker clearly evaluates Philip's strategy v. the Dutch and the English. For reasons that he explained early in his preface, the Mediterranean theater gets shorter coverage, but it is clear that the Med. concerns were never far from Philip's mind. The French Huguenots also don't get as detailed treatment as they could have gotten, but Parker's summation of the results of Philip's policy towards France is still satisfying.

Parker makes many allusions to strategic and policy issues of the recent past, and it is clear that Philip's problems were not all the different in scope, if not in scale, than those faced by political and military leaders today. Philip's inability to discipline himself to focus on one event to see it through to completion, his inabiltiy to keep himself from micromanaging decisions from over 600 miles away, and his inability to see past his divine mission to perceive reality will all strike familiar chords.

Bottom line: Great history, great interpretation, great analysis. It has got to be a classic in the field.

Perfect!
Some people still insist military tactics apply to business. Once I took a public relations course, and our textbook was Clausewitz's treaty on war. If you want to avoid mistakes, to design a sound and practical strategy for whatever your business, then read Geoffrey Parker. In this book, Philip II is judged through the lenses of planning, and most importantly, of results and achievements. Why did Philip failed in his great enterprise? To make decisions is not only a matter of information -Philip was well informed of affairs- but of judgement, passion, and careful coordination with those who execute decisions.

Graphics Master 6: A Workbook of Planning AIDS, Reference Guides, & Graphic Tools for the Design Planning, Estimating, Preparation & Production of Typography, electronic
Published in Hardcover by Dean Lem Associates (December, 1996)
Author: Dean Phillip Lem
Average review score:

Excellent Guide and Reference - A Must Buy!
I bought the Sixth Edition during my last semester in college and found information not told in my art/design classes. This is a packet that you can easily turn to for a quick reference on print preparation and production. During the past two years, I've mainly worked on web projects and now started to do print work. Graphics Master is a BIG help. GET IT when you see find a chance. The Eight Edition may be out soon. No other books out there offer the information bundled in this packet; from listings of over 1200 fonts, type weights, copyfitting charts, swatches, binding info. and etc. It's a gold mine! This is one of the main components you will need throughout your design career.

An essential reference for all graphic designers!
With all the attention on the World Wide Web these days, it is easy to overlook the continued importance of the world of printed matter. With the domination of computer-based production, it becomes all too easy to believe that the computer is the only tool necessary for making graphics "happen". But the computer is but one component in a chain of problem-solving and production planning activities. Knowing how to make compelling art and design is one thing, but what do you do with the content after your brainstorm? How will you plan to use your creations in any given production format? This essential reference contains a wealth of just this sort of information, and belongs on every designers' bookshelf. Most of my students are amazed at the amount of information in this book - they always learn something new that was never covered in school. A thorough working knowledge of the subjects covered in Graphics Master 6 can make the difference between being regarded as a "junior" designer, or being regarded as a well-rounded, experienced professional. Even if your world seems to only include designing for on-screen media, there is a lot to gain from browsing through this reference work. I am frankly amazed at the growing number of "so-called" graphic designers who don't know much of anything contained in these pages, and I don't know how they will be able to be considered true professionals in the world of creative design and production.

Grayfox
Published in Hardcover by Bethany House (April, 1997)
Author: Michael Phillips
Average review score:

An excellent life-enriching story.
Grayfox is a story of Zack Hollister's journey as he grew from being a boy into a man.
It covers his problems at home where he thinks that everyone regards him as a young boy not important to his family, and how he joins the new Pony Express to try to escape from his troubles. As he goes along, he begins to see things about himself and everyone around him through new eyes with the help of Hawk Trumbull, a God-fearing man that lived in the desert. During this time he constantly had close encounters, both unpleasant and pleasant, with the Paiute Indians, and finally came to a realisation that everyone was not against him.
I think this book is well worth reading as it tackles subjects relevant to everyone in a way that makes us think. Similarities are constantly apparent between Zack's problems and real problems we might have in our own lives, and helps us find a way to conquer these problems without directly striking against us which would make many people close their ears.
The story is very exciting with a lot of sudden plot twists that compel us to keep reading on, not wanting to put the book down. Each chapter in the book is very short so it dosen't seem like it's taking a long time to finish the book. This book can be read just as a story very well, or one can go deeper and study the underlying messages existing the whole way through the story.
The characters of the book are extremely life-like and it is easy to picture each one of them and relate them to people we know in life. The story is believable and seems like it could be an actual journal of somebody's life, which makes it easy for us to follow and relate to.
The book teaches us how to look at things carefully and deeply, and not to just take it at face- value. It also teaches us to learn from everything that we observe and try to find it's meaning, as everything has a reason for being there. If the thing we are observing is a problem, we are able to overcome it by studying it in this way.
A lesson we learn from this book is that the hardest thing to do for most people is to swallow one's pride and admit that they were wrong. Many people can act tough, and many people believe that those people are 'men' but few of them have the courage to apologise or say that they were wrong.
The book shows us how important fatherhood is to a person, both in the actual relationship between the father and the son, as well as being a picture, no-matter how imperfect, of how God cares for us as our Heavenly Father.
I think that this is a superb book and would recommend it to anyone having problems with their family life, new Christians for general reading to help them get a better picture of God, as well as to anyone who is just looking for a good book to read.

This book tops my list of favorite books!
Grayfox is a most fantastic book. Once I had started on it, I could hardly put it down. I read past midnight and did not want to sleep. Although it is kind of meant more for boys, I enjoyed it thoroughly. The book is not only interesting, but didactic too. Michael Phillips showed Zack Hollister's feelings as a rebellious kid very well. He had also illustrated Drummond's fatherly love very well. Hawk was a good teacher. The Indians and Indian tales that M.P. brought in enhanced the entire plot. The reconciliation at the last was a fitting end. I give this book full ratings. It is sound and promotes moral values, unlike many modern books with explicit details on sexuality and violence. Grayfox is none like this

The Great Impersonation
Published in Hardcover by Amereon Ltd (September, 1980)
Author: Edward Phillips Oppenheim
Average review score:

An absolutely thrilling story.
I first read The Great Impersonation twenty-five years ago and the memory of that first reading still keeps me breathless each time I reread this masterful story. The characters are well drawn (although they are typical of the genre - Pre-WWI, English upper class, and "foreign" royalty), the pace is swift, and the plot is both simple and ingenious. Although I consider myself savvy when it comes to "thrillers", Oppenheim kept me in great suspense until the very last page. In subsequent years, I have read as many of Oppenheim's books and stories as I can get my hands on - about a dozen, obtained from used book stores - (he wrote hundreds - practically all of which are out of print), and these certainly vary in quality, but I can state, unequivocally, that The Great Impersonation is his best, and, in fact, one of the best stories of all time.

Looking for a Jolly Good Read?
This is storytelling at its peak. Although a rather just-state-the-facts author, Oppenheim created a delightful story by doing just that: weaving facts into a web that cannot be deciphered until the final chapter. He led the reader through a seemingly straightforward spy novel, only dropping hints at what was to come. This is a great read for anyone who likes their classics served with a twist.
